Charleston, WV (HNN) – West Virginians who have lost their jobs as a direct result of a major disaster can apply to receive an additional seven weeks of Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) under the new Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008, which was signed by President George Bush on Nov. 21. This additional compensation availability brings the total number of emergency unemployment benefits to 20 weeks.

The additional seven weeks of EUC was effective Nov. 23, 2008. Unemployed individuals who have an eligible claim, who have exhausted their regular unemployment benefits, and who have not received the 13-week extension, may be potentially eligible for 20 weeks of EUC benefits.

Individuals who have already received and exhausted the 13 weeks of EUC benefits may also qualify for the additional seven weeks of EUC. Using their last address on record, qualifying individuals will be notified by mail within the next two weeks and will receive instructions on how to apply for the additional compensation.

Unemployment as the result of a major disaster is defined as: (1) the physical damage or destruction of the place of employment; (2) the physical inaccessibility of the place of employment due to its closure by federal, state or local government in immediate response to the disaster; or (3) lack of work or loss of revenues, if, prior to the disaster, the employer or self-employed business received at least a majority of its revenue or income from an entity in the major disaster area that was damaged or destroyed in the disaster, or an entity in the major disaster area was closed by federal, state or local government.

Individuals should contact the Unemployment Compensation Division in Charleston at 304-558-2729 with questions regarding EUC or how to file for benefits. In addition to EUC assistance, WORKFORCE West Virginia Career Centers offer re-employment services, including testing, counseling and job placement.
