Charleston, WV (HNN) – Tyler Mountain YMCA in Cross Lanes, WV has closed its summer camp at least until Monday due to a swine flu outbreak, according to the Kanawha –Charleston Health Department and the YMCA.
Three cases have been confirmed --- two eight year olds and one seven year old. The number quickly rose to 28 possible cases. Most of those diagnosed had gastrointestinal symptoms. High fever, sore throat and body aches may appear by the fourth day.
Depending upon which web site you utilize, the number of H1N1 swine flu cases in West Virginia vary from 77 (reported by the CDC, http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/update.htm) to a Charleston Gazette report of “more than 100 people” mostly from Wood or Kanawha Counties, to television stations reporting 125-135 cases statewide based on Bureau of Public Health data.
The Tyler Mountain YMCA will remain open, but not the camps.
“We have taken proactive steps by contacting parents and guardians of children in our programs to inform them,” YMCA of Kanawha Valley President John Giroir stated in a news release late Tuesday. “We are also working with the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department to provide the most accurate information possible to everyone involved.”
The Tyler Mountain camp had about 130 children in day camp, sports camps and summer day camps.
Previously, the Kanawha – Charleston Health Department had issued guidelines for summer camps and the possible spread of the H1N1 virus.
