Charleston, WV (HNN) – A 58-year-old woman with underlying health issues has become West Virginia’s sixth H1N1 death, according to Rahul Gupta, director of the Kanawha Charleston Health Department.

Dr. Gupta indicated the woman had Influenza A, but it is a “safe assumption” she had H1N1. 99% of those testing positive, like this patient for Influenza A, also test positive for H1N1. Final test results are pending.

The patient died Saturday night at Thomas Memorial Hospital from “complications” of the flu. She had been taken Monday by ambulance to the hospital.

Dr. Gupta confirmed that the woman had one of the high risk underlying conditions.

West Virginia Governor Manchin and the state’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Cathy Slemp, will deliver a public statewide address on the swine flu situation on Monday, Nov. 2, beginning at 10 a.m.

The Kanawha-County Health Department will not release additional information at this time.

This is the first death for Kanawha County. Cabell County has four deaths from the virus, including a teenager. The state total is six and includes a 17-year-old Morgantown High School student.

The Kanawha Charleston Health Department will be holding informational meetings this week regarding the virus from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Riverside High School Auditorium (Monday, Nov 2), Capitol High School Little Theatre (Tuesday, Nov . 3), and St. Albans High School Auditorium (Thursday, Nov. 4).
