AAA FUEL GAUGE: Gasoline Prices Dip Almost a Penny in West Virginia
Special to Huntingtonnews.net
As West Virginia motorists prepare to head to their Thanksgiving Day destinations, they will find gas prices at the pump have dropped just under a penny. Currently, the average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline is $2.674. The national average price at the pump is $2.638 a gallon.
According to the AAA Fuel Gauge, oil prices ended Monday up eight cents, closing at $77.54 per barrel after having nearly reached $80 per barrel earlier in the day.
The US dollar, which has thus far proved a major player in oil prices during the second half of 2009, opened the week showing signs of weakness yet again. As has been the case for much of 2009, when the dollar shows weakness oil prices tend to rise.
Two important news items related to oil and retail gasoline prices emerged late last week. The Federal Highway Administration announced Friday, Nov. 20 that cumulative mileage driven by US motorists in 2009 through September showed a small but noticeable increase of .3 percent when compared to the first nine months of 2008.
Another important news item deals with the fuel efficiency of the vehicles US motorists drive. The Environmental Protection Agency announced late Friday they anticipate the average fuel economy for vehicles driven in the US will make a small increase in 2009 to 21.1 miles per gallon. The average fuel economy in 2008 was 21 miles per gallon. The agency noted the average fuel economy has increased 9 percent, or 1.8 miles per gallon, over the last five years.
Thanksgiving travel this week provides a unique opportunity to gauge the mood of US motorists. According to AAA projections, the number of travelers by automobile this year is expected to be 33.2 million, an increase of 2.1 percent compared to last year. The small increase in automobile travel shows some consumers are starting to return to their travel habits and that consumer confidence is starting to return in some measure.
