Blind Couple Take the "Litter Gitter" Challenge: Adopt YOUR Block

The city-wide volunteer program "Adopt Your Block, Be a Litter Gitter" got two unlikely recruits to the cause Thursday. Buck and Mary Ann Saunders are blind, but they still managed to beat the

Huntington to Ft. Lauderdale Announced

"Huntington to Ft. Lauderdale" Who would have thought you'd ever see those words printed on an airline schedule? At $69 one-way, to top it off. Huntington Tri-State airport is on a roll, and Senator Jay Rockefeller, IV, beaming like a proud papa, was at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena, Wednesday, to announce the new flight.
Other equally proud politicos and bigwigs were there, too. But you, most likely weren't.

Nearly 100 Crowd City Hall Steps to Demand End to War

Peace activists, senior citizens, Marshall students and citizens of all ages crowded the steps to listen to speakers decry the waste in lives and money expended on the war in Iraq. They also signed a petition to stop the war and bring the troops home, which they delivered to a representative from Rep. Nick Rahall's office. The speakers included a Marshall professor who's son was in Iraq for the tearing down of the statue of Saddam Hussein and then made to go back for a second tour of duty. He was nearly killed several times and his father calls the war a mistake we should never have made.
Huntington News producer Tony Seaton has video of the rally and the story behind it.

A Sad State of Affairs in Louisiana

It's been two years to the day since Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, and this anniversary is one not to be celebrated. Thousands remain without homes, the cost of available rentable housing has doubled or tripled, murder rates have skyrocketed and illegal drugs and misery are rampant in the "temporary" trailer parks the Federal Emergency Management Agency foisted upon the already helpless citizens of the lower Ninth Ward.
A bill before congress attempts to assuage some of the damage, albeit much belatedly. There is a petition circulating that you can sign asking our representatives to see that it passes. See that petition's link and watch a short Robert Greenwald film chronicling the disaster that is New Orleans, two full years after one of the worst natural, and some say, partly government-made, disasters to ever strike this country, by clicking this link: Two Years After Katrina

Oooh! and Ahhh! Were the sounds heard almost as often as the sounds of a vintage bi-plane, a former Soviet Bloc-made plane, and a single-engine Citabria on the riverfront Sunday. Pilots from as far away as Huntington...Indiana, made the day, which was already spectacular, even more so, with their daring-do and smoke-filled-sky acrobatics.
