Downtown Depot Lures Shoppers to its Lair
Halloween at The Depot

The shop normally features artisans who show how they mold their handiwork that's on display. For Halloween, nothing quite so serious. It's a fun holiday, so the Downtown Depot
decided to have fun with it.
Producer Tony Seaton shows you how they did that. Please click on a pic to join in.

Marshall Homecoming 2007
Thousands Watch Hour-Long Parade

High school and middle school bands from around the area, fire departments, dance studios, big kids, little kids, and some politicians all paraded from the Big Sandy Superstore Arena to Marshall's arena, Joan C. Edwards Stadium, to get ready for some football Saturday afternoon. We've got a large sample of the parade, presented without commercial interruption or narration. Just like it would look if you were standing on the corner near the Memorial Student Center watching it.
Producer Tony Seaton shot it from there for you.

Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria in Ohio River
MRSA Not Found There, Yet.

Research on antibiotic-resistant bacteria in area waterways by Marshall Professor and Head of the Division of Biological Sciences, Dr. Charles Somerville, has been ongoing for years.
He and a team of biologists have traversed the Ohio and its tributaries from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois. They have found drug resistant bugs throughout the system.
Producer Tony Seaton talked with Dr. Somerville about his findings and about how bacteria become resistant. Click on a pic to see the video report about antibiotic resistant bacteria right in our backyard.

Cabell Huntington Hospital Taking MRSA Seriously
"A Major Concern"

Despite pronouncements of late urging folks to take it easy and not worry too much about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report warning of AIDS-like death rates for antibiotic resistant staph germs, infection control health care specialists at Cabell Huntington are implementing rigorous new regimes aimed at stopping their spread. They have at least four MRSA patients in hospital at Cabell now. They are also seeing a type of patient that's never before had this potentially deadly strain of the staph germ, so the hospital is cracking down on practices that may spread them by requiring all medical personnel and everybody else, to, among other things, wash their hands, often.

Huntington Symphony Orchestra Live From Space
Guest Conductor and Visual Elements Bring New Experience

It was an interesting juxtapositon. Space-based movie musical themes and visuals featured in a 1920s era Baroque-style theatre. It worked like a charm. Hundreds turned out to hear the HSO pull that off in its new home, the world-famous Thomas Lamb-designed Keith-Albee. Now the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center, its amazing design and acoustics only served to heighten the experience of hearing live symphonic orchestra music. The Huntington Symphony Orchestra, led by guest conductor 26 year-old Angela Santangelo, played music from Star Wars, ET, and Star Trek. Check out
producer Tony Seaton's video of the evening.

Must Be Demolition Season
Cammack Joins Emmons Senior Behind the Old Ball and Crane

We showed you the last day of school at Cammack back in May. The only thing left to do after that was wait for the demolition crews to roll into the south side. Now, they have, and they've rapidly turned the back side of Cammack into a pile of rubble, just like the Emmons Senior apartments. Unlike Emmons Senior however, but like the work Rick Mechstroth and the Master Mechanical Insulation team will do on Emmons Junior, and are doing on Cammack, hand demolition work is required to maintain the facade of the old Cammack. In the case of the Emmons Junior, nothing is being preserved, it's just going to be a harder job than Senior has been, since it has a steel infrastructure and looms above an ongoing business. Cammack though, is just taking a breather before new construction begins on the very same site for the new school, with the old Cammack front grafted to it. If you missed the last day at Cammack story in May, here it is again, with the oh-so prescient words of Alice Cooper's School's Out as backing...
"school's been blown to pieces."
Tony Seaton has that video for you. Please click on the Cammack facade pic above to launch it.

90 Degrees In October?
Air Pollution, Air Inversions, Ohio Valley Topography Conspire

Considering yet another VERY extended "Indian Summer," we thought we'd show you a story you might have missed when we first posted it at the beginning of the normal summer, in May, about the unique air 'qualities' of our area. Along with Marshall Professor Frank Gilliam, we attempt to explain, at least partially, why our weather and air is what it is. Emmons Senior Reduced to Roman Ruins
And they're just getting started

Demolition. Day One. It started about 3:00 in the afternoon. The morning and early afternoon were spent putting together the crane with wrecking ball attachment and covering up sidewalks so when tons of bricks rained down upon them, they wouldn't be damaged. And rain bricks it did. Water rained down also, as demolition crews, in conjunction with the fire department, managed to hose down the dust as it billowed. A rainbow was even created amidst the destruction. Mailboxes were moved and gates were put up. And of course, streets were closed. Much more work will be required to bring down this tank of a building. Constructed by who-knows-how-many brick layers and other construction workers who obviously took pride in their work in the early 20s, the brick walls almost seemed surprised they were being disturbed. But down they came, and producer Tony Seaton shows you what that looked like. Please click on a picture above to watch the tearing down of a Huntington landmark.
