HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - East Carolina forward Darrius Morrow scored a game-high 33 points, including the winning free throw, to lead the Pirates to an 82-81 win over the Thundering Herd men's basketball team Saturday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

Morrow hit 11-of-17 shots for ECU (11-8, 3-2 C-USA) and was 11-21 from the free throw line. He also led the Pirates with eight rebounds.

Tirrell Baines led the Herd (13-6, 1-3 C-USA) with 21 points, tying his season-high. He was an efficient 7-of-9 from the floor while putting up an identical 7-9 performance from the free throw line.

The Herd scored the first seven points of the game and would lead until the final seconds. Baines and Nigel Spikes opened the game with buckets before a DeAndre Kane trey capped off the stretch. Marshall hit nine of its first ten shots. The advantage would reach as many as 15, 39-24, with 4:47 left in the first half before holding at 12, 50-38 at the break.

Marshall missed its first seven shots of the second half while turning the ball over four times in that stretch. That allowed the Pirates to cut the deficit to just one, 54-53. Dago Pena took over at that point, hitting three three-pointers in just 1:19 to push the lead back up to nine points, 63-54. A dunk by Baines continued the run to extend the advantage to 11 points.

Damier Pitts hit a three-pointer with 1:45 remaining in the game to give Marshall an 81-74 lead. That would be the last point the Herd would score as ECU would finish the contest on an 8-0 run. The Herd would commit a pair of turnovers and miss a pair of free throws over that span.

A missed free throw by Marshall with 25 seconds remaining gave the ball back to ECU. Jontae Sherrod missed a three, but Morrow grabbed the offensive board, made the shot and was fouled. He connected on the free throw to give the Pirates their first lead of the game. A Pitts three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short.

Pena finished with 17 points, tying his season-high. He was 5-6 from three-point range. Kane finished with 15 while Pitts scored ten.

Sherrod recorded 19 points for the Pirates while Brock Young had 16.

Marshall won the rebounding battle by a 32-28 margin while the Pirates finished with a slight .551-.549 shooting edge.

The Herd will be on the road Wednesday, traveling to face UAB at 8 p.m. Next Saturday, the team returns to the Henderson Center to face Memphis. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
