No. 53 Marshall Tennis Tops Kentucky, 5-2

MU improves to 4-0 on the season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 53 Marshall University women’s tennis team wrapped up its four match home stand with a 5-2 victory over the University of Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club.

The Thundering Herd (4-0) will carry its momentum into Clemson as MU will partake in the NCAA National Team Indoor Tournament where they will face Vanderbilt on January 29th and either Clemson or Dartmouth on the 30th.

For the fourth-consecutive match, MU took a 1-0 advantage into singles by winning the doubles point. Down 5-2 on court one, Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna rallied to reel off six straight games and take the win, 8-5. The duo is now 4-0 in doubles on the season.

Court two was also victorious as Catherine Kellner and Maria Voscekova outlasted Caitlin McGraw and Marni Venter, 8-6.

The Herd received singles wins from Kissell on court one, Kellner on court three, Voscekova on court five and Kucin on court six to secure the team victory.

Kissell dropped the first set to Megan Broderick, then charged back in the second a third set to take a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision. Kellner continued her fantastic play as she rolled past Khristina Blajkevitch, 6-1, 6-1, and remained unbeaten. Voscekova also remained undefeated with a 6-4, 7-5 win over McGraw. Kucin rounded out the day with a 7-6 (14-12), 6-1 triumph in sixth singles.

The Herd faces its second-straight SEC opponent when Marshall and Vanderbilt face off at the Indoor Team National Tournament at 9 a.m. on the 29th. Depending on the outcome, MU will either play at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. on the 30th against either Clemson or Dartmouth.
