While today's rising generation of young West Virginians may have difficulty finding exceptional role models at the top levels of our government, this wasn't always the case for Mountain State youngsters. Granted, we may have to go back nearly 150 years to find true heroes for our young people to emulate--but they are there, waiting to be rediscovered. Read more

The Lone Star State has always captured the imagination of the rest of America. From its beginnings with tough individualists like Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, Texas has asserted itself as a place where people can grow a new life for themselves or a family. Today, it's doing it again, with fully 37 percent of all new jobs in the U.S. being created in Texas. That's nothing short of amazing. Read more

People in conservative circles across West Virginia are beginning to ask variations on this same basic question: "Is Bill Maloney on a ghost train in his quest to overtake Acting Governor Earl Ray Tomblin?" Those asking this question note that they have seen very little of Maloney since his Republican Primary victory several weeks ago. And they wonder what kind of money Maloney can put together for the upcoming fall campaign. Read more

I have a flower garden. It consists mostly of zinnias, cosmoses and marigolds with a few calendulas. The zinnias and marigolds have proliferated. They are now in full bloom with some generations wilting and new generations budding and flowering. It is a glorious sight to see, particularly in late evening when the sun, low in the west, directs its eye point-blank at the garden. I can view it out my front window where I sit in my easy chair. Its looks in the sun like a Saturday football stadium with its thousands of faces.

In October 2008, when the 15 member countries of CARIFORUM (CF) individually signed a full Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the collective European Union (EU) of 27 countries, much was made of the promise of increased benefits to Caribbean countries. Two and half years later, the promise remains unfulfilled.

Just to be clear, I think Col. Gaddafi is one of the worst atrocities ever visited upon the planet Earth. However, he is the sovereign leader of a nation, one with whom we have done big time business, commercially and politically, for years. Now that President Obama has approved the use of armed predator drones against Libyan forces, the U.S. has effectively declared war, begging the obvious question: in how many other places will he open up these kinds of military floodgates?

We appear to be at a momentous point in our human story, the culmination of all our activities as a species to date, an ironic chapter in which those characteristics that have made us so successful -- our inquisitiveness, creativity, and inventiveness -- threaten our survival.

When I grew up, there were wonderful dads that were the staple of television. These TV dads were an ideal that we all realized was a bit too perfect, but these dads (and moms, for that matter), made us feel good. I liked Ward Cleaver (Hugh Beaumont on “Leave It To Beaver”). I liked Steven Keaton (Michael Gross on “Family Ties”).

My libertarianism comes out strongest with my opposition to our endless foreign adventures, especially Iraq and Afghanistan, but including Yemen, Pakistan, Libya, etc. I've made it clear in past commentaries that I'm opposed to foreign aid to all countries -- including, but not limited to Israel, Jordan, Egypt and Pakistan -- all of which receive huge amounts of money from a nation that has plenty of problems on the home front -- and that frankly is busted, flat broke, insufficient funds.

The culminating press conference with Oliver Luck and Dana Holgorsen is over, and things are quieting down a bit up in Morgantown. But what a cost to the fans of WVU and its football program across the state. Defenders of Oliver Luck will say that "hindsight is 20/20," but great leaders are possessed of foresight, at least to some degree. Luck should have seen the inherent difficulties with his two-coach arrangement from the start. Read more

Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by accident, or miscalculation, or by madness. The weapons of war must be abolished before they abolish us.

Some Marshall football fans might find the trials and tribulations of the WVU football program an entertaining carnival to watch lately. However, the real takeaway from this complete debacle is to have a better understanding of human behavior when dealing with personnel matters. Oliver Luck, whom all called brilliant when he came in as WVU's Athletic Director, has quite possibly done himself in due to a lack of basic awareness of what makes coaches tick. Read more

I’m an avid skier and this past season I took on a role I never expected. I became the “helmet police,” whenever I saw people not wearing a helmet. I did my police work in a polite, respectful manner, but I couldn’t help but get a bit more passionate when I confronted “Parental Hypocrisy” in its finest: with skiing parents and their kids. Parental Hypocrisy is not taught in Parenting Classes or is a recommended Parenting skill or style.

Despite recent strides made in the study of Clean Coal Technology, environmentalists like President Obama still have their hearts set on getting America weaned away from energy derived from coal-fired power plants. This will be very tough and quite expensive to do, since almost 50% of our country's energy is derived from coal and nearly 90% of our energy reserves come from coal. No country can change that overnight. Read more
