The Chief Minister of Anguilla, Hubert Hughes, has repeated a call for his small Caribbean island of 90 sq km and 13,600 people to become independent from Britain whose colony it has been since 1650. He is doing so in the worst of economic times for Caribbean countries and during a period of great uncertainty in the world generally.

We heard repeatedly from those running in the recent Special Primary Election for Governor that the lack of interest in the race was palpable statewide. While an occasional good turnout indicated that at least some West Virginians were interested in who would be leading the Executive Branch for the next year, the general response from the public was one big snore. A new, citizen-driven nonviolent reality is emerging in the escalated war on drugs in Mexico. The international perception of present-day Mexico is one of disgust about the escalated violence, thousands of fatalities, mass graves and militarized approaches to fight the powerful drug cartels.

Technology has me in its grasp. It won’t let go. It’s got me by the proverbial - what do you call those things you juggle? Is this “Computer addiction?” I didn’t realize that I was its victim until I reflected on my growing use and, yes, dependence on “My Tech!” But, saying I’m its “victim” is a large exaggeration since I’m really its beneficiary and it has changed my life, mostly for the better. Say what you will about the House Republican Budget Bill proposed by Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), but the fundamental truth remains that it took a Republican Majority in the House to finally begin the ball rolling towards curbing the federal budget before it destroys this nation. Let’s call it “Dramatic license,” as I totally adore my family and wouldn’t trade them or my life with anyone else, but at this moment, time, and place, I don’t like them very much.
