New York, NY (28 April 2011) – The United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI) has invited Brazilian diplomat Alan Coêlho, Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the UN, to make opening remarks at a briefing for non-governmental organizations on indigenous rights and the need for free, prior and informed consent in mining and development projects. The briefing is in advance of next week’s session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD).

The bitter remarks being exchanged by GOP Governor's candidates Bill Maloney and Betty Ireland are already wearing us out. You may feel the same way. The exchange of nasty, namecalling remarks in the Charleston Daily Mail today shows that there are deep fissures in the Party of Lincoln, ones that might be difficult to heal by October. Read more

As we have noted before, West Virginia Republicans have a decent shot at the Governor's Mansion this year. Despite the next Governor's term only being for about a year, such an opportunity would give the GOP a chance to show the state what a real Republican Administration looks like, setting the GOP up well for both the Governor's race and legislative contests in 2012. GOP Gubernatorial candidate Betty Ireland appears to be having more problems with fundraising, if the absence of promised TV ads is any indication. Shortly after GOP rival Bill Maloney went up with his first TV ad on April 10th, the Charleston Daily Mail quoted an Ireland spokeswoman saying that their campaign's TV ads would begin "within the week." That was ten days ago and still no Ireland TV ad as of this writing. Read more

Bill Maloney has been called "Raese Lite" by many political observers across the state. After all, he's wealthy, he's from Morgantown, and he's done well in business. But whereas John Raese has always had a whole other dimension--that of a citizen activist, taking on the powers that be in Charleston and Washington--Maloney just isn't there. Read more
